Our Mission

Preston’s Arts Center, Inc. has been a family-owned business for 63 years.  Don Preston and Kathy Brennan are second-generation shopkeepers.  Over the past twenty-six years, Preston Arts Center has evolved from a paint and wallpaper store to a fine arts materials store.

Staffing has evolved as well.  Preston's now looks for artists who can be trained for art materials retail and customer service.  When interviewing staff, Don and Kathy look for people who have the heart of a teacher and a life-long learner.  While many of the staff teach in the classrooms on site and elsewhere, they have educational encounters with artists of all types, every day.  The work entails being a detective:  What are you doing?  What are you using?  How are you going to do it?  What that means is that they have to be able to carefully listen to you, the customer, analyze and detect any difficulties you may encounter, and recommend to you the best products, explaining why these will work well for you.  Many days customers need technical advice on how to get  desired effects with products, what may be necessary to finish a project, or how to use unfamiliar products.  Preston Arts Center staff make sure the customer leaves with the products best suited for his or her needs. Then, there is the beginner artist.  It is the mission of each staff person encountering a beginner to make art a successful experience for him or her by recommending products that work well and are in the right price range. Most times, recommending an appropriate class where the student can learn enough skills to enjoy the endeavor is the perfect answer.  Each selling opportunity is an educational encounter for the staff.

What we have to offer:

  • Art Classes
  • Easels and other Furniture
  • Portfolios
  • Giant Canvas
  • Art Instruction Books
  • Gift Cards
  • Air Brush Supplies
  • Friendly Advice and Assistance

At the present time, most of the sales staff is made up of graduates or students currently majoring in art.  We are privileged to have energetic, talented, enthusiastic young people who are eager to learn about artists' materials and who are excited to be able to share their knowledge with customers.  They are a creative network, and Preston Arts Center is a rewarding environment in which to work.  Staff is always discussing the creative work that they produce and showing it to other staff for praise, suggestions and friendly critique.  They foster a creative atmosphere, which supports each of their endeavors.
